Brew Review – Gourd Shorts by Florida Beer Co.

Pumpkin beers! Gotta love some pumpkin beers.

Seriously. Everyone has one, so you’re going to see a lot of them around. It’s just hard to get a ton of them since so many Florida pumpkin beers tend to be tap-room only. That’s why I had to travel to Central Florida to get my bottle of Florida Beer Company‘s Gourd Shorts (Vegetable Beer, 6.5% ABV).

This is, clearly, how a pumpkin beer should look. It’s got that deep, golden color that I love. As for the flavor, this is one of the few bottled pumpkin beers where the pumpkin flavor is distinctly noticeable. Many pumpkin beers tend to focus more on pumpkin spice flavors, not on the flavors of the pumpkin itself. It’s hard, since pumpkin has such a subtle flavor, anyway. There is a noticeable amount of the flavor in this beer, however. And yes, there is some pumpkin spice there, too, but it’s not overpowering.

In all, it’s an excellent example of what vegetable beers can be. Unfortunately (and traditionally), this is seasonal, so if you didn’t get yours this wave you’ll have to wait to catch it next year.

And if I see a pumpkin big enough to wear shorts and carry a surf board, I’m running very fast in the opposite direction.

Drink Florida Craft,

Dave
