Brew Review – Alpha Mango Foxtrot by Wynwood Brewing

Today is Friday, Feb. 13th, 2015. Ooh, scary.

Tomorrow, Wynwood Brewing in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District will be tapping the beer they brewed with James and Martin from Brew Dogs. I can’t be there, which is a shame. But, in honor of that, I’m letting my Friday post be the last Wynwood Brewing beer I was able to sample. And this one, like most of what I have been writing about for the past few weeks, comes courtesy of Due South’s recent Trench Day beerfest and beer release. The lone Wynwood beer there was Alpha Mango Foxtrot (Imperial Red Ale, 7.7% ABV, 48 IBU).

This beer starts off as their Fox Imperial Red Ale, then dry hopped with Falconers Flight hops and mango that one of their mug club members grows. That mango really comes through. It also tends to accentuate the sweetness from the hops, and they blend harmoniously together. It’s a big ale, but with just a moderate hoppiness. There’s a rounded malt sweetness that makes the beer fantastic.

Wynwood is no stranger to adding mango to their beer. To think of it, it’s a great idea. It’s got a big, meaty sweetness that goes really well with malt, and it makes the beer feel quintessentially Florida.

Hopefully we can start seeing some mango make its way into a standard release beer from them.

Drink Florida Craft,

Dave
