Why just drink beer when you can watch a film about beer? While sitting in a brewery? While drinking beer?
Blood, Sweat, and Beer is a documentary that follows two breweries, Shorebilly/Backshore Brewing Co. in Ocean Park, MD. and Brew Gentlemen Beer Co. in Braddock, PA., as they navigate neglected neighborhoods, trademark lawsuits, and other issues in an attempt to open their breweries.
The film also explores the incredible explosion of craft beer in the United States. There are interviews with people like Brewers Association founder Charlie Papzian and Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman. A little closer to home, clips from Tampa’s own Cigar City, 7venth Sun in Dunedin, and Jacksonville’s Intuition Ale Works.
According to Chip Hiden, one of the filmmakers, interviews were filmed with Wayne Wambles and Joey Redner at Cigar City, Intuition’s Jessie Erickson, and 7venth Sun’s Devon Kreps & Justin Stange. Unfortunately, with the incredible amount of footage they filmed and the very small amount of time allotted in the film itself, the interviews never made it. I’ve seen it in other documentaries, but I can always hope the interviews make it to bonus features eventually…
It was produced, directed, edited, and filmed by D.C.-area filmmakers Hiden and Alexis Irvin. This marks their second film together. The film premiered last week in D.C. to a sold out crowd, and even got Hiden and Irvin an award for “Best in D.C.” filmmakers.
And you don’t have to fly to D.C. to see it. All you have to do is drive to Madeira Beach.
During Tampa Bay Beer Week, there will be a screening of Blood, Sweat, and Beer at Mad Beach Brewing Co. in Madeira Beach. For $10, you get one of Mad Beach’s craft beers and a seat to watch the only screening of Blood, Sweat, and Beer in the Tampa Bay area. If you want to purchase tickets to this event, you can do so here.
I can’t make it, but hit me up on Twitter and let me know what you think of it!
