Brew Review – Parade of Souls by Barrel of Monks

I recently visited Barrel of Monks, Boca Raton’s first production brewery and specialist in all beers Belgian. They have a fantastic lineup of classic Belgian-inspired beers, but one cannot operate a brewery on just a few beers. Diversity is good for the soul.

And, so far, what I’ve sampled is excellent. Some are light, such as their Nuance Saison or White Wizard Wit. And some are frighteningly dark and heavy, such as Parade of Souls Belgian Imperial Stout (Imperial Stout, 10% ABV).

This is a heavy, dark, foreboding, sleep with the lights on and check under your mattress kind of beer. The dark fruit flavors are up front and in your face, with a lot of roasted fig, currant, blackberry, raisin, and plum notes along with a deep, bready maltiness that is flavorful beyond compare.

The aroma, however, is very inviting and has sort of a clean snap to it, different from the heavy, dark maltiness the rest of the beer contains. It’s big and it’s bold, but it rewards brave drinkers with a wonderfully rich and complex flavor profile.

It’s a truly incredible beer. But you’ll need to sleep with the lights on afterward.

Drink Florida Craft,

Dave
