Brew Review – Big Sound Scotch Ale by Cigar City Brewing

At this point, do I need to give more of an introduction to Cigar City other than to say Cigar City? It’s Cigar City. Everyone knows them.

I’ll skip right to the fun stuff, then. I like Scotch ales, and Cigar City made one, so naturally I had to get a bottle of Big Sound Scotch Ale (Wee Heavy,  8.5% ABV, 40 IBU).

This beer was inspired by the Tampa Bay Pipes and Drums, which is part of a huge Scottish subculture Tampa has that I knew absolutely nothing about. Color me surprised…

As for the beer, it’s a traditionally heavy Scotch ale. It’s very syrupy and dark, almost like Cigar City’s Winter Warmer. There’s a beautifully dark, hugely roasted malt quality to the aroma of the beer that carries into a molasses-like malty flavor, which likes to hang very heavily on the palate.

This is definitely a giant beer, big in alcohol and incredibly difficult to session. Just the way a bunch of kilt-wearing Tampans with bagpipes would probably want it.

Drink Florida Craft,

Dave
