Marzens in October are a time a dozen. There’s. a lot, and they’re almost required for any brewer worth their salt.
The odd thing is you never really see that many adjuncts with your Octoberfest beers. Any why is that, really? We’ll throw just about anything in any other beer, but Marzens are sort of left alone.
It’s a robust beer, let’s play with it. Miami’s Concrete Beach did, and that’s how they decided on Floridafest (Marzen, 5.5% ABV).
What makes this beer so special?
To start, it hits all of the standard, traditional Marzen notes. There’s a beautiful, crystal clear deep golden color with a rich, slightly foamy head.
The beer is malt forward as anything, with a light caramel and toffee palate. Noble hops are kept low, and the rich sweetness tends to temper itself nicely with the coconut.
There’s the rub… Coconut. In a fall beer.
Don’t knock it. It works very well, bringing an almost nutty sweetness to the beer. It’s just a hint, this isn’t a pina colada, but it gives the beer a great added depth.
It’s great to see the king of fall beers is here, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with it. We’ll have to wait and see what next year brings.
