Man, it’s been rainy and ucky here for days. It stinks. Isn’t this supposed to be the sunshine state?
That’s a cliche of a joke, I know. But, the closest I’ve been able to get to sunny sunniness lately is a growler of Sun Bum (IPA, 6.4% ABV, 47 IBU) from my buds at Islamorada Beer Company.
And I can explain the magic behind this beer by saying this: honey roasted IPA.
Yup. Honey roasted. Not ‘hey, let’s just add honey in the boil,’ but actually honey roasting the malt. That brings an almost Honey Nut Cheerios quality to the beer, in a very, very good way.
There’s a delightful sweetness coming from both the honey and the malt that tends to make the beer inviting and refreshing. To be sure, there’s a lot of hops in the beer, with big, floral notes of juicy alpha acids. But it’s a bot more accessible with that wonderful honey malt.
Hopefully the clouds will burn off soon. In the meantime, I’ve got some Sun Bum to keep me warm.
Oh, yeah. Finished the growler. Bummer.
