Brew Review – True Blonde by Tampa Bay Brewing Co. @tbbco @sipthesunshine

Today’s Sip The Sunshine is going to start on a bit of a downer, I admit.

That downer comes from the rapidly dwindling population of the Florida Panther, Florida’s Official State Animal. They’re endangered, and the population has been declining as long as I can remember.

Encroaching development, loss of their native Florida Everglades, and the high rates of deaths along Alligator Alley have all contributed to the state’s loss of this majestic cat.

That’s not to say no one here cares. Exactly the opposite. There’s plenty of organizations that try to promote awareness and conservation.

Others will celebrate and laud this feline stalwart. The obvious one is the hockey team, located across the street from the everglades. Tampa Bay Beer Co. Is in on the act as well, releasing the new year round True Blonde (Blonde Ale, 5.3% ABV).

Sold in their two tap rooms and in quite a few places in the Bay area in TBBC’s signature pint cans, True Blonde has been on the market for several months as Tampa Bay Brewing’s third regular release.

It’s an ale, but it’s fermented at a slightly lower temperature than ales usually are, leading to a slightly smoother and softer drinking experience. It has a light malty quality to it, reminiscent of a strong Pilsner.

It also has a strong hop quality that I’ve noticed many of TBBC’s beers contain. It’s not bad, and it’s not a pale ale. But there’s a slightly citric bitter quality to the beer I din’t readily expect. In other words, it’s classic Tampa beer.

And you can try that Tampa beer, along with lots of other beers from places around Florida, on October 29th in Sarasota. Tickets are still available at

And help save the Florida Panther. We Floridians need to stick together.
