Brew Review – Big Deal Imperial Stout by Darwin Brewing @darwinbrewingco @lucky

By now, many people in Florida, myself included, are enjoying the new locations of Lucky’s Market popping up around the state. The Colorado-based chain sells high-quality groceries and quite a comprehensive beer and wine selection.

And now there’s one beer Lucky’s will have that you can’t find anywhere else. Lucky’s partnered with Bradenton-based Darwin Brewing Co. to release the new Chocolate Cherry Big Deal Imperial Stout (Imperial Stout, 10.3% ABV).

I was lucky (no pun intended) to get an early release bottle, and I’m in a lot of trouble. This is going to be a seasonal release available only at Lucky’s locations in Florida, and it’s one of my favorite imperial stouts.

First, the base beer is really dark and oil-thick. It has a big, dark brown foamy head that carries big notes of coffee, molasses, and brown bread. Those flavors are in the beer, heavy but with a welcome lack of brutal alcohol headiness.

To that, the culinary geniuses at Darwin added dried cherries and chocolate. This was a great move, and the beer really benefits from these ingredients, especially the cherries. This beer has the most pronounced cherry flavor that I’ve ever had. It works wonderfully with the dark malt and the light chocolate, and makes the beer light and juicy.

Absolutely fantastic, which is becoming par for the course with Darwin Brewing.

If you’re in North Florida, you can meet the Darwin reps at Lucky’s in Gainesville on Friday the 18th from 4 to 7 PM. They’ll also be in the new Tallahassee location on Friday the 18th from 5 to 8 pm and again on Friday the 25th from 4 to 7 PM.

Go visit them. It’s a big deal.
