Coffee beers are nothing new. Big shocker, I know.
Slowly but surely, however, coffee blonde ales are starting to become a thing. And a strange thing they are.
The first time I tried one was at St. Petersburg’s 3 Daughters Brewing. That beer was Awake Coffee Blonde, brand new to cans and shelves across the state.
Now this is a good beer, but it’s a little jarring to have a huge, roasty coffee flavor coming from something that looks closer to an IPA.
Well, 3D upped the game significantly with a recent bomber release of Double Mocha Coffee Blonde Ale (Blonde Ale, 9.7% ABV).
To that is a wonderfully rich and deep flavor of cocoa, very much like a high cacao bar with a great, creamy mouthfeel.
All of this from a beer that looks like an IPA. You know, it works. Really well. Most coffee beers tend to be porters, so there’s a heavy roasted malt presence you have to fight through.
With the blonde ale, however, you have a light, biscuity sweetness as the back beat, allowing those wonderful cocoa and coffee notes to be heard so much clearer. It’s a great and wonderfully inventive brew.
But it looks so weird.
