I need to forego my usual ‘Native American or Not’ naming introduction when I review a Lake Tribe beer and go straight to the one-sheet they created for Old Chief Extra Special IPA (IPA, 9.1% ABV, 100 IBU), namely the following warning they provide:
“Not a fan of hops and bitterness? Get off my lawn!”
Live by those words.
They aren’t kidding. Not at all. This is a seriously dank beer with a serious hop addiction. Apparently bad things happen in Tallahassee and they need to scare the spirits away with a bottle of Old Chief, maybe chased with episodes of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I dunno, it’s been a while since I’ve been there.
So it’s an incredibly resinous beer, with a strong, sweet finish of toffee laced liberally with lots of citrus and monstrous alpha acids. A lot of that comes courtesy of a big malt bill that also leaves the beer with it big alcohol content.
It’s intensely flavorful and definitely not for the faint of heart. There’s a lot going on in the beer, so those brave enough to take on the Old Chief will have a lot to enjoy.
And if you’re not interested, close the gate on your way out, will ya?
