Trust me, if I lived in Bradenton, I would be going to 3 Keys a lot more. They are genuinely nice people, with a wonderful facility and some utterly fantastic beers. Plus, they have this awesome growler and tap fountain out front. I mean, just look at it. It’s awesome.
So I went back a little while ago, because I was in the area and I was notified that they had started to make ciders. I am a big fan of ciders, so I had to try this for myself.
I didn’t start with the ciders, however. I started on the Hazelnut Coffee Stout (Milk Stout, 6.8% ABV, 22 IBU). This delightful entry into the coffee Stout field was made with 2 pounds of coffee, locally roasted at Kahwa. It was massively bold and nicely sweet, with a one-two punch of coffee flavors coming from the coffee and from the dark malt as well. The liberal lactose addition dialed up the sweetness, and gave it a silky smooth character.
But remember, there are ciders. And I definitely had to have some Nice Melons (Cider, 6.6% ABV). This is a watermelon cider, something I didn’t know they needed in my life as much as I do now. It’s got a great watermelon flavor, and it is wonderfully juicy. I absolutely loved it, and I think it’s funny that it has as high an alcohol content as the bolder coffee stout.
I wish 3 Keys could sell out already so they could have some sort of statewide distribution and I could get them more often. Unfortunately, this family-run business is too community-focused to do that, so in the meantime I will have to devise more ways to get over to Bradenton.
I mean, that fountain really is amazing.
