Sebastian Ortiz is not a name known to many people.
He was a South Florida teenager, born to his parents Oscar and Rose, on his mother’s birthday. 15 years into his life, Sebastian was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a particularly aggressive form of cancer.
And while there were many treatments and many attempts of chemotherapy, Sebastian left this world at the age of 17. That led his father Oscar into a bewildering look into the very sparse nature of research and understanding of children’s cancer.
Only 4% of all funding raised for cancer research ever goes to Pediatric causes, which lead his father to create Sebastian Strong, an organization that raises funds for cancer research and to help both children with cancer and the families of those children.
One of the many events that Sebastian Strong has held in recent months was an event at The Tank Brewing in Doral. Ownership at The Tank are close to the Ortiz family, and they created Sebastian Strong Saison (Saison, 6.2% ABV, 26 IBU), a beer made to celebrate Sebastian’s life and to raise funds for this worthy cause.
If it wasn’t good enough to have a beer that raises money for Pediatric cancer, the beer is just gosh darn good as well. It is one of the softest saisons I’ve ever had in terms of mouthfeel, being a lot more velvety-smooth than the sometimes overly carbonated styles that are out there.
The flavor is great, bringing in solid notes of lemon and other citrus to a light puffy pastry feel. A lot of this comes from a liberal dry hop of Australian Ella hops, closely related to Galaxy and the source of a lot of those great tropical flavors.
It is amazingly refreshing and very flavorful. And it goes to a great cause, The Tank even going so far as to creating specific growlers just for this beer. It should still be on tap, and hopefully in a few weeks we will have an interview with Oscar and the team from The Tank up on the Florida Beer Podcast.
In the meantime, I strongly recommend visiting SebastianStrong.Org to learn more about his life, the organization, and how you can participate.
