I am very jealous anybody who has been on the Space Coast recently. With the recent celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 astronauts walking on the moon, everybody in the area turned out all the bells and whistles (and beeps and alarms and contact lights) to celebrate this momentous event.
It reminds me of our visit to the Brix Project, the tap room and production facility of Playalinda Brewing Company. Coming off I-95 onto State Rd. 50 then turning right onto US-1, you get a spectacular view of the enormous Vehicular Assembly Building off in the distance. (I’ve been inside, it is as mind-bogglingly enormous as you would think.)
Anyway, that’s one of the many reasons why I’m particularly fond of Playalinda Brewing. I’m also happy to see if they have expanded their distribution to a greater area within the state.
I know that they will have taps everywhere pretty soon, but I’m starting to see their two major canned releases all over the place. As a result, I easily had to go for some Robonaut Red Ale (Red Ale, 5.3% ABV).
Named for a robot created by their neighbors at NASA and sent into space to work at the ISS, Robonaut looks wonderful with a great reddish-brown color that is absolutely crystal clear. The flavor definitely has a big punch resulting to a very generous hopping during brewing.
The malt qualities are light and you can just make out a hidden caramel current in the back, but then the punchy earthy hops come up and basically take control. There’s a moderate dankness and incredible bitterness to the beer that stays with the flavor and goes down nice and smooth.
The 50th anniversary has come and gone, but Robonaut Red is going to be sticking around for a long time. And if you’re heading to Canaveral to celebrate, it’s worth it to make the slight detour to the great brewery across the water.
I’m sure you can see it if you squint hard enough.
