Brew Review – Pax Odeon by Coppertail Brewing @coppertail

Since I am at home and not going anywhere for the foreseeable future, I wanted to go through my notes and see if there are any beers that I’ve enjoyed, but never wrote up for the blog. I came across Pax Odeon (IPA, 8.4% ABV), an IPA in the Alpha Hunt series of exclusive beer releases from Coppertail.

Meant to be an exploration of newer and novel hops, the Alpha Hunt series is a run of limited release, hop-forward beers in 16 oz. tall boys, with the artwork that has become really famous throughout the state setting Coppertail apart. Pax Odeon combines relatively standard Simcoe and Mosaic hops along with Loral and Sabro, two varietals I have never even heard of. I’m excited about that.

I will say, however, that cracking open the can and pouring it out makes the aroma practically explode with those classic citrus-forward alpha acid notes. It immediately made the room smell like a brewery, something I’m not exactly opposed to. It has a beautiful golden color and the flavor is exactly what you would expect from a hardcore West Coast IPA.

There’s an interesting mouthfeel, kind of creamy and coats your mouth with giant flavors of grapefruit and resin. It doesn’t stop, either, as there’s always a bit of that hop overload on your tongue even as a biscuit malt sweetness dances in and out.

Long story short, this was born and bred for the Hop Heads. I know there are other beers in the series, and if they are anything like this, they are definitely not for the faint of heart.
