Brew Review – Mangolandia by Veza Sur @VezaSur

Love them or hate them, you have to admit that Veza Sur has an uncanny pulse on exactly what makes craft beer in Miami-Dade County tick.

For those of you unaware, Veza Sur is the fourth, and currently newest, brewery in the Wynwood district of Miami. It was opened as the collaboration between two breweries that had been purchased by the craft beer wing of Anheuser-Busch InBev and, as a result, they had a big marketing push in the region that continues to this day.

I have not had a chance to check out their tap room, amazing as I have heard it is, but I did have a six-pack of their core beer Mangolandia (Blonde Ale, 4.8% ABV) sent to me.

The presentation screams that somebody in St. Louis did their homework and did it well. Instead of traditional 12 oz. bottles or cans, it is instead bottled in 11.2 oz. stubby bottles, common with breweries in the Caribbean (think Red Stripe). There is great work artwork on the cover including one of Calle Ocho’s famous roosters and it looks like the beer is made either in house in Miami or contracted to the Islamorada facility in Fort Pierce.

As for the beer itself, it pours a hazy, light, golden color with a soft head and very unassuming nose. The flavor is kept light and refreshing, not overly better or harsh at all. There is a mango quality to the beer, but it is not intense. It’s very light and if somebody told me that the recipe was brewed for either a hot summer day or to be used as a mixer, I would not be shocked.

I am sure this beer the basis or footprint his only going to expand in the state along with the recent influx of other AB-InBev owned labels. A lot of people have strong feelings about them one way or the other, but it is nice to see something made in Miami that is gaining a larger foothold.

And the roosters. Can’t forget about those roosters.
