Brew Review – Rey de la Alegria by King State and Tripping Animals @trippinganimals

There is so much to talk about with this beer that I’m not totally sure where to begin.

First, it’s a beer from King State Brewing. They are a new-ish crewery, coffee roastery, and eatery in Tampa, located among interestingly named Floribraska Ave.

Sad to say, I have not been to them yet.

Today’s beer is a collaboration with them along with Tripping Animals Brewing. They are in Doral and have an amazing amount of street cred for the flavorful beers they are coming out with.

Sad to say, I have not been to them yet.

I got the beer at Mendez Fuel, a Miami Mobil station with the most incredible selection of beer, wine, food, keto snacks, and, um, fuel I’ve ever seen.

I have been to them. And on my visit I got a crowler of the beer that King State and Tripping Animals made together, Rey de la Alegria, (Sour Brown Ale, 6.6% ABV).

Translated, it means king of joy, and here I would like to pause to express my joy and give love to the concept of a sour brown. It’s an absolutely beautiful style that simply nobody makes. I openly wish for it to be made more, and unfortunately it just does not happen all too often.

But they made one, and they boosted it up with additions of guava, lime, and vanilla, each of which I absolutely love anyway. That all combines to create one of the best sour beers I’ve had in a very long time.

It’s nice, almost to an Oud Bruin, but not quite there. It’s knocking on the door, though.

The aroma favors the lime and the vanilla more, with a touch of the guava coming in on the back end. The flavor, however, acts as a bit of a reverse to that, giving a big rush of guava that comes in with some of the lime tartness. As those fade a little bit, in comes the bold vanilla flavor a a light accentuation.

This beer is like a proper symphony from a master, everything I’ve wanted in a beer but without a clue I needed them together.

King Of Joy, indeed.

Drink Florida Craft,

Dave
