That is a title I never thought I would write.
And if you look at it, really look at it, it’s a little amazing.
First of all, a waffle cone caramel fudge stout feels like it should be served with a floater of whipped cream or something. It’s taken the penchant of Florida beer drinkers to like their dark beers by way of a sundae and moved it to an almost absurd height.
That it comes from Khoffner Brewing is amazing because Khoffner, and theIr fantastic owner and brewer Rauf Khoffner is a fantastic traditionalist. Not only does he love brewing the classic styles, but he’s really, really good at it.
To see him make such an incredibly crazy dessert beer like Wafflecone Caramel Fudge Stout (Stout, 9% ABV) is almost a giant “I told you so” to most of South Florida’s craft beer community. It’s not the sign of a massive sell out, but that (of course) he could do it and (of course) he’s really good at it.
Because, dear reader, this beer is just as jaw-droppingly decadent as it sounds. It’s got a solid stout base backed up with bold roasted notes of cocoa, coffee, and chocolate, with a beautifully deep dark brown color and the aroma of, well, you know what’s coming.
I am going to need to know what he did to make this beast. I would assume that the fudge is from a liberal dosing of cocoa beans, unleashing a very deep and powerful dark chocolate river that runs through the beer.
That’s not all, though. He did manage to get noticeable and significant notes of waffle cone and caramel in there. You can taste all three of them, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a little lactose thrown in there just for the heck of it.
Everything is there as promised, everything is sweet and decadent, and it’s the big dessert stout explosion that Florida craft beer drinkers tend to enjoy. I’m not saying I hate this beer, far from it. It was quite a blast and something a little different to enjoy.
Of course, the next time I go back, I’m looking forward to that Marzen he always seems to have on tap. It’ll be nice to come down from the Sugar Rush.
