I dictate my blog posts, so it’s always a crapshoot as to how my phone will take the names of certain breweries. Bowigens is no exception, so I can’t wait to see what my phone comes up with.
That was not the reason I wanted to get back into them, though. I’m a big fan of them, and it’s difficult for me to get their beers on a regular basis. So when I do, I try to jump at the chance, as I did with Bow 9 (Pale Ale, 6.5% ABV, 41 IBU).
I wanted something refreshing, with a little bit of complexity and flavor to it, and Bow 9 hit the spot. As listed, it is a pale ale with fresh orange zest and a hint of wheat. Basically consider it a less spicy, slightly hoppier witbier.
Maybe there’s not as much wheat in the malt bill as a traditional witbier, but if you can think of that combination, it’ll get you close.
It is wonderfully delicious, starting with a slight opaqueness and a deep orange color that is very inviting and telling. The aroma brings forward the orange, and you can tell there’s going to be a good citrus juiciness to the beer, but not one that is excessively sweet.
The flavor of the beer has an interesting citrusy combination that is deep and lightly bitter from the use of orange zest, but also sweet coming from a dry hopping of Citra and Cascade. And it’s the hops, especially the Citra, that brings much of the earthiness to the beer that is welcome, but not significant.
This beer, however, belongs to the orange that’s been propped up on a soft and sparkling malt bill with the wheat. It’s the main draw of the beer. That, and a simple refreshing drinkable quality which this beer contains in spades. That is exactly what I wanted from a beer, and of the quality I expect from Bowigens. It is sad that I won’t get to try too much of them, but hoping that will change in the future.
Besides I love writing about them.
