Brew Review – IPGA by Twisted Trunk

I have a couple of ‘big fish’ snags I need to get when it comes to the Florida Beer Podcast, interviews I’ve always wanted to do and will help tell a more rounded story of Florida craft beer.

One of those is Fran Andrewlevich. If you’ve never heard of him, in many ways he is the father of craft beer in Palm Beach County.

He founded Tequesta Brewing, and once they were well-established, instead of expanding the brand he went on to open two more breweries: Steam Horse in Downtown WPB and Twisted Trunk in Palm Beach Gardens.

Of the three, I am most familiar with Twisted Trunk. It’s the only one that I’ve actually been to (which is a shame), and it’s beers I’m most familiar with. Of the beers they have released into the wild, arguably most popular is IPGA (IPA, 6.2% ABV, 67 IBU), the beer named for the boulevard they are located on.

It’s an IPA, and it’s quite flavorful. It has a light golden color, and an aroma that belies more of a floral hop than a citrus-based juice bomb.

The flavor changes a little bit and becomes a bit more fruit forward with notes of honeydew, pineapple, and orange, along with a floral quality on the back end.

This is not a citrus explosion, more of a tropical fruit medley. It’s like the IPA version of one of those fruity poolside mixed drinks with the little paper umbrellas.

One day I’ll get Fran on the podcast. In the meantime, I will be searching out his beers and posting them here.

Fran, if you’re reading, give me a call.
