It’s literally one of the best beer names in Florida craft beer, just breathtakingly effective in its simplicity. It also shows off some of the unique aspects of living in Florida, as it is entirely possible to see the sunrise and the sunset on the beach in the same day with nothing but a 3-hour drive in between.
And there’s plenty of breweries in between.
When it comes to influence in craft beer, Florida’s West Coast tends to be the stronger player. Not that the East Coast has anything bad, far from it, but there’s more going on in terms of hype and respect for the West Coast, especially the area in and around Hillsborough County.
Head north to Pasco County, and that’s where you’re going to find Escape Brewing. They’re a particular favorite of mine, and it’s been fun to watch them grow and gradually take over more and more of the strip mall in which they are located.
One of their original beers, which quickly became one of their signature beers, is The Other West Coast (IPA, 7.1% ABV), their iteration of a West Coast (read: Pacific coast) IPA.
It was liberally dosed with a copious pile of Centennial, Citra, and Mosaic hops, so you sort of know what you’re going to get into when you take a deep whip out that light golden liquid.
The flavor comes with a light citrusy goodness, filled with a pine resin undercurrent that showcases the flavors to come. Right out of the gate I got the flavors of melon, one of my favorites and generally not what you expect when Citra is involved. As the beer warms up a bit and the bouquet has time to grow, then those big citrus qualities of orange, grapefruit, and lemon come in, jacked up on delicious alpha acid resin. It’s what people on either Coast expect from a solid IPA.
Make no mistake, this is a solid IPA, simple and classic and artfully done. And if you’ve never been to the other West Coast to try and Escape, it’s worth the drive.
Regardless of what coast you’re on.
