Brew Review – Whiskey Barrel Belgian-Style Golden Strong Ale by 3 Daughters Brewing and St. Pete Distillery @3dbrewing @DistilleryVibes

I love St. Pete.

Growing up, I never really understood the city. It was always that place that’s far away from Tampa, the city I wanted to go to.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore Tampa. The history, the architecture, the community, my beloved Lightning, and (naturally) the beer scene have to be experienced to be believed.

But it seems like St. Pete more than holds its own when it comes to the bay area. They’ve got the Rays, they’ve got a vibrant arts scene, the Chihuly Museum is amazing, and the St. Pete beer scene is on par, if not better, than Tampa.

Yes, I said it.

Naturally, as is happening all over Florida, once the breweries take root, the distilleries follow. And St. Petersburg Distillery is no slouch. Known for their line of Old St. Pete whiskies, of which I am a consumer and big fan, the people at 3 Daughters connected with them to make an exclusive beer for Total Wine & More, Whiskey Barrel Belgian-Style Strong Ale (Strong Ale, 9.5% ABV, 23 IBU).

3 Daughters has had Golden Strong ales before. They are no stranger to the style, and do an excellent job at it. But this was finished in beautiful Old St. Pete whiskey barrels, giving the finished product an ending that not only screams of good taste, but is dripping with civic pride and all of the wonderful things coming out of St. Pete. It even has the Fresh From Florida tag on the side of the can.

The beer ended up with a beautiful deep golden caramel color, with an aroma that is wonderfully honeyed and belies notes of raspberry, vanilla, and spirits.

The flavor is amazing and has to be tasted to be believed. There’s a solid fruity aspect to the beer, with an almost sherry-like raspberry, blackberry, and boysenberry quality to it. Along with that is a healthy oak and leather undercurrent, hinting at the Old St. Pete whiskey without an excessive alcohol load. It finishes off with a very delicate touch of plum, currant, and circus peanut, all the qualities of a classic Belgian Golden Strong I’ve come to enjoy.

I love both 3 Daughters and St. Pete Distillery, and from a collaboration like this it is incredibly easy to see why. It’s a fantastic beer and hopefully the first of many collaborations between these two heavyweights.

I would love to call them neighbors, though. We’ll see if that actually happens.

  1. St. Pete seems to be a nice town where beer is the scene. In Italy, where I live, there is a wonderful pub, the Knulp, where craft beers are front and centre. If you happen to be there give it a spin!
