As an aside, I must say thank you to the quality craft beer bars of the world. I am not getting around Florida anywhere near as much as I used to or would like to, so to see something like this come by my neck of the woods is a great pleasure.
Anyway, it’s wasteful as anything, but I have to say I like dry hopping.
Popping in the hops in during fermentation douses a lot of those hop flavors, without the need for any of that pesky bitterness.
And so here we are with Big Gulps, Huh? (Double IPA, 7.8% ABV) by our friends at 81Bay Brewing in Tampa.
Back to the beer, and the slightly resiny aroma it contains. Once again, I reiterate my love for the dry hopping as the hop-forward flavors of the Citra and Mosaic hops flow forward a lot more than the overly pine resin qualities that Citra has been known to impart from time to time.
The flavor dips a toe into New England IPA waters, almost (almost) without the odd lactose and vanilla cream flavors some other IPAs bring to the party. Obviously not the ones with actual lactose, that should be stated.
There’s an arousing crispness to the beer, and while the hops are ever-present and make themselves known, the bitterness is muted nicely to where it’s enjoyable by a wider swath of craft beer drinkers.
While I prefer getting my beer straight from the source, sometimes it cannot be helped. In a situation like this, I was more than happy to be able to grab a draft and enjoy a beer from a brewery I haven’t been to in a long time.
Who knows? Maybe I’ll get some more cool stuff at the nearest craft beer bar.
