Brew Review – Good Gourd by Cigar City

For those of us in craft beer utopia, fall is a study of differences. The purist, more snobby, more Reinheinsgebot (usually me) love the season because the season means Oktoberfest.

Those that are less interested in gatekeeping love this season for the return of pumpkin beers.

Yes, much like coffee, pumpkin is now a seasonal part of beer and shall remain that way for the foreseeable future, if not permanently.

Some pumpkin beers are new, and some have just been around for a very long time. Here in the state of Florida, one of those long-term pumpkin beers is Good Gourd (Pumpkin Beer, 8.8% ABV, 28 IBU) from Cigar City.

It’s actually been quite a long time since I had touched this beer; I think my last Good Gourd was well before the great changeover and I found it interesting to see that was the only craft on draft at a local event I had to go to celebrating the Halloween season.

Naturally, I had to give it another go.

It is a lot more intense than I remembered it being. For some reason, I always thought of Good Gourd being a standard Amber ale with ABV to match, maybe some light pumpkin spices.

I was treated to an almost nine percent Imperial Amber that is quite heavy and quite the taste experience, if this is what you’re looking for. It is appropriately deep orange in hue. The beer has a heft to the aroma, a lot of cinnamon and nutmeg, and touches of vanilla, allspice, really all sorts of absolute wonderful warming flavors for the season.

In a slightly spiky mouthfeel and medium weight, the intensity of both heavy roasted and caramel malts go hand in hand with those heady warming spices to deliver an unmistakably fall beverage.

It is luxurious and incredibly difficult to avoid how amazingly autumn this beer is. Frankly, if you are the target audience for this beer, it will be absolutely perfect for you. If you’re not the target audience for this beer, why have you not accepted pumpkin beers into your life? They’re not going anywhere, they’re quite flavorful, and it’s fun to have something a little bit different to celebrate the season.

We will be in the season of gingerbread and candy cane porters soon enough. For now, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the gourds.
