Finally got into this.
I needed to a long time ago, but I finally got into this.
I love white stouts because they’re such a contradiction in terms. A stout is meant to be black as night, not a blonde ale.
And yet here we are, with Unbranded throwing their hat into the white stout ring with Gone Phishin’ (White Stout, 5% ABV).

Now the color definitely looks like a blonde ale, maybe just a touch darker than expected. The aroma is where you really start to get the differences, and that is the Oaxacan coffee used in the beer.
White stouts tend to go for coffee as the main agent pushing their flavor from blonde ale to darker beer territory, but the coffee they used here packed quite a punch. You definitely get it in the flavor as well as the boldness of a heavy peppery flavor profile, but without the heat.
Without that heat, what’s left is a massive flavor without a massive weight. That and heavy amounts of cacao nibs help that coffee deliver the weight of a stout and the delicious rich flavors of a stout without having to impart the color of a stout.
Honestly, this was a success. I enjoy the style and the Unbranded team did a great job in execution. It hit all the right switches of a heavy stout without actually being heavy. Or dark.
But that coffee, I wouldn’t mess with that on its own.
