I just enjoy speaking to Prison Pals founder Juan Pipkin.
First and foremost, stemming from a previous lifetime, I have an odd affinity for anything Argentinian. Especially as we are engaged in the next World Cup, it was fun to talk to him and hear his ideas on Argentina’s chances for winning it all in Qatar (Edit: Saudi Arabia? Seriously?).
The other thing that he enjoyed talking about on a recent conversation (And yes, you’ll hear it on the Florida Beer Podcast very soon) was their doubling down with the thematic concept of the brewery. If you take a look at their Instagram account, Juan has a wonderful description of why they chose the name Prison Pals.
We also went over the Prison Pals tagline more than a few times during our interview: Escape Your Prison, Taste Freedom. To summarize, and this makes a lot of sense, we all have a prison. Whether it’s work or family, stress or something along those lines, a great way many people like to escape their internal prison is with good friends and a pint of well-crafted beer.
Obviously Prison Pals wants to be the ones to craft that beer, and I say more power to them. After the interview, I received a few samples that I’m going to be reviewing on the blog, but with the conversation he and I had about escaping your prisons, Golden Cage (Double IPA, 8% ABV) seemed like a good place to start.

This beer, a collaboration with their Doral friends Tripping Animals, is a big juicy West Coaster. It pours crystal clear and the aroma immediately pops with heavy-gauge citrus notes.
This beer is a hop lovers delight, and there is definitely a strong drenching of pine resin in the aroma. The flavor practically screams alpha acid, though, with malt wisely hiding in the back as huge notes of grapefruit, orange, lemon, pine, and pineapple are brought front and center with a wonderfully aggressive alpha acid kick.
Basically, this won’t release you from your prison as much as it might just melt the bars. I know plenty of people in my life that love their hops, and this very expertly crafted, very wisely labeled West Coast double IPA is perfect for them to immediately take the edge off the stressful day and relax with some friends.
It’s been fun to watch everything Prison Pals has done and is continuing to do. In the meantime, I’ve got some beers I need to get through and I’m going to enjoy every single drop of it.
In or out of my cage.
Drink Florida Craft,
Dave
