I have absolutely no clue how they still have their stock of glassware, but they sure do and I was happy for it.
I know that’s a strange way to start off an article, I was just impressed and amused by the glassware at Ellipsis Brewing. To be honest with you, everything about Ellipsis sort of felt homey and familiar. For those in a certain age, walking into Ellipsis (which is maybe 5 or 10 minutes away from Orlando International Airport) is perfect for those of us that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. There is video game stuff literally everywhere, and a bunch of relaxed seats strewn around a very industrial locale.
Ellipsis was basically formed by homebrewers in the area, and I was able to speak with one of their founders, Robert McKee, on for an upcoming episode of the Florida Beer Podcast.
You’ll hear more about their background later, and since we were so close to Orlando International Airport you will definitely hear planes in the background as well. Once we wrapped recording, we continued our conversation and managed to grab a few beers along the way. They are well known for their berliners, and one of the beers left over from their recent one year anniversary that I had to try was Berry Cannon (Berliner Weisse, 4% ABV).
This massive explosion of berry flavor combines blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and a massive dose of marshmallow. Plus it’s green. Really, really green. If you take a look at the glass, you can see I got a medium pour of it. Says right there on the glass. I love that more than words can say.
I have no idea whose bright idea it was to put marshmallow in this, but it is amazing what that did to the beer. The berry flavors were absolutely explosive in this beer, very clearly inspired by Samus Aran from the Metroid series of video games and yes, if you got a four pack of the beer, you would definitely see their beloved artwork on the can label. It’s not necessarily sharp, but there is a light sharpness there. This is more about the berry flavors and this amazingly creamy soft vanilla sugar-free flavor that that marshmallow brings, and I cannot emphasize enough how flavorful and how delectable that made the beer.
Of course you can’t live on crazy dessert easy berliners, so he also gave me a small pour of I Citra You Not (DIPA 8.7% ABV). This double IPA was liberally dry hopped with Citra, of course, but they managed to bring out a lot of the citrus characteristics of the hop without being too overly brutal on the alpha acids. It’s there, and it is noticeable, but it is not overpowering. I generally stay away from double IPAs, but I would readily go for this one again.
I have been recommended Ellipsis many times over by Mike from At The Bar podcast, and I was very happy to finally do something about that recommendation, and was very nicely rewarded for it. If I’m in Orlando again, it is definitely some place that I want to swing by and grab a growler from, since the beers were just that good and the environment was just that fun to be in.
And if I go dear readers, I will report on it, and you will know exactly how much beer I had when I was there thanks to that glassware.
