Brew Review – Smoothie Sour Guarapita by 26° Brewing

Let’s admit it, the smoothie sour is here to stay.

This heady mixture of fruit and tang and whatever stuff exists at the bottom is a part of your life now. It’s best to just accept it and move on.

What’s funny is as I dictate these sentences, I am coming to the bottom of a can of Smoothie Sour Guarapita (Sour Ale, 6% ABV) by my good friends at 26° Brewing.

And as I pour the last remnants into the glass, in comes the fruit drinkiness that some people love, and others abhor.

Look, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a beer, and if it tastes good I will drink it.

Yes, this tastes good. The color comes out kind of a salmon-orange, with maybe a touch of pink and yellow? Maybe, it’s an interesting color.

Kind of a cute tropical color actually.

With the aroma, well, the beer clearly focuses on two fruits, guava and passion fruit. And you smell those in abundance when you take a sip.

When you drink, however, there’s a lot going on. That passion fruit really comes up front and center with the guava not too far behind. Once those dissipate, and it takes a few seconds, the vanilla really comes in.

With all of this, you get a bit of the guava graininess (if you know you know), then everything else is gently ironed out with the lactose. The lactose also likes to set the vanilla off right and give it a really great and creamy aftertaste.

Is this a beer for everyone? Probably not. Is it a beer that is tapping into the current trends that a lot of people will definitely enjoy? Absolutely. It is a style that is definitely going to be around and drinking beers like Guarapita will show you why.

And of course, the chunky stuff at the bottom.
