Brew Review – Blood Orange Wheat Ale by Persimmon Hollow Brewing Co.

This is a better question for them than it is a musing on a blog post, but I am guessing that Deland-based Persimmon Hollow has a cushy new distribution agreement. All of a sudden, I’m seeing them more and more in my local stores.

This is exciting. I remember very well, in the early days of the blog, desperately trying to hunt down their signature black cans of Daytona Dirty Blonde, Beach Hippie, or otherwise. Nowadays, not only are they appearing with more regularity, but it looks like they’re starting to push displays a little bit to get the word out that much more.

They’re also pushing other beers, including Blood Orange Wheat Ale (Wheat Ale, 5% ABV, 20 IBU).

This is something I hadn’t seen from them before, but I blinked and suddenly it’s all over by me.

To be honest, it’s a worthwhile six-pack to pick up. It’s got a hazy golden, maybe slightly orange tinted color, with a nice candied orange aroma.

It’s cool, it’s almost like stepping into Davidson of Dundee if you’re familiar with them. That’s the kind of citrus smell that it gives off.

In terms of drinkability, it is quite simple, quite refreshing, and very much easy to drink. It has a light body with some wonderfully sweet wheat notes, and all of that plays host to an orange flavoring that isn’t too sugary or syrupy, but also isn’t too bold as blood orange beers tend to be.

They found a beautiful mix of the two and toe the line quite nicely to give a good orange flavor and dimension to the beer without being too aggressive either way. It is a perfectly Florida beer, and a really good show of everything that Persimmon Hollow does.

But I am also hoping that this means that we’re going to get even more out of them in the coming months. If we don’t, I know which Persimmon Hollow six-pack is coming home with me.

Drink Florida Craft,
