It’s always fun to see when a single beer is the impetus to launch an entire brewery. And it’s even better when you get to celebrate that brewery’s anniversary.
Such is the case with Hop Life Brewing in Port St Lucie. They are celebrating their 2-year anniversary this weekend, so a well-deserved congratulations to them.
One of the beers that I hope they will have on tap is the unique monstrosity that is their Root Beer Porter (Porter, 5.5% ABV, 34 IBU).
Yes, it is a porter and not a root beer. But this was the beer that got Hop Life started down the road to the celebration they are having this weekend. This was what won them awards at homebrew competitions, and for really good reason, because I have not experienced many beers like it.
I am fully aware that craft beer is just now getting over the alcoholic soda craze that swept the nation a few years ago. This is not that.
This is a straight Porter, with a moderate roasted malt bill that gives light touches of pumpernickel, a tiny bit of coffee, and even lesser amount of cocoa, and plenty of soft earthy hop characteristics. But I would be remiss if I did not tell you that the aroma of this beer is exactly like opening up a nice, cold bottle of IBC root beer.
I don’t know what they did, I don’t know how they did it, but whatever spices and flavorings and adjuncts they used makes it smell exactly like you skipped out on the beer and went straight for the remnants of one of those alcoholic sodas, just swimming in vanilla and spice.
But this is a beer, and an excellent one at that. The root beer qualities are there in the flavor, it’s not nearly as intense as the aroma, but it’s more of a light, traditional Porter.
And it’s beers like that which made Hop Life such a great addition to the Treasure Coast brewing scene.
Big congratulations to everyone on their anniversary this weekend; it is well deserved and I cannot wait to get out there again.
