Brew Review – Tupac Shaporter by Ivanhoe Park Brewing @IvanhoeParkBrew

Breweries are not known for their subtleties. Most breweries, anyway. And if there’s any way, shape, or form they can create to throw a well-placed pun or twelve into their beers, they are all for it.

But there are certain puns I never expected, least of all involving the late, great Tupac Shakur. Ivanhoe Park Brewing in Orlando has never been one to shy away from the crazy, especially when it is also involving a rather beloved public figure (e.g. Suck It, Trebek).

On my first visit, many, many moons ago, I heard tell of a great dark beer known as Tupac Shaporter (Porter, 7.3% ABV). There was none to be found while I was there, but after my visit, the next batch won a gold medal at Best Florida Beer.

Luckily, I was able to get some direclty from the brewery, as part of the recent episode they did with us on the Sunshine State Happy Hour. Once I was able to try it, I understood. Everything except the Tupac connection.

It lists as an American Porter, which I’ve always found is a nomenclature meaning “We brewed this like a porter, but overhopped it because everything in America is overhopped.”

I did not find that to be the case with this. Exactly the opposite, Mr. Shaporter seems to be so velvety sweet and smooth I can’t be surprised if the recipe reveals the addition of oats or lactose. It’s that creamy and soft.

The big roasted notes of chicory, coffee, dark (dark) cacao and pumpernickel shine through with almost ruthless abandon. It’s moderately bold but still keep a delightful balance. If you do get hops, they’re of a slight earthy nature that is firmly in step with how solidly malt-forward the beer is meant to be.

The rumors were true, the medal well earned. The beer, possibly seasonal; it’s namesake, timeless. Whether this is a fitting tribute to a fallen hero or a clever play on words not yet seen, only Ivanhoe Park Brewing can say.

The only thing I can say is I still need some more.
