Brew Review – Pig Jig Lager by Florida Avenue

Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis is a disease that is as scary as it sounds. Basically, it scars the kidneys, leading to their inability to filter out what the body needs to have filtered out.

It’s incredibly rare and the disease that was unfortunately a part of the life of Tampa resdient Will Wellman.

Instead of drinking away, Will and his friends devised the best way they could to raise awareness and funds to fight this disease: a barbecue competition.

Said barbecue competition is known as the Pig Jig, and the competition is as ferocious as the interest in combating the disease.

Every year in late October, bands, breweries, and corporate barbecue pitmasters from around the area converge to battle for bragging rights and to donate much needed money to NephCure International, a non-profit organization created to help battle this disease.

The 2022 event is coming up on October 22nd at Julian Lane Riverfront Park, and for our small part we will review the beer from the 2021 10th anniversary event, affectionately known as Pig Jig Lager (American Light Lager, 4.2% ABV).

A specialty release from Florida Avenue Brewing and their brand new Wesley Chapel facility, this American Light Lager is a wonderfully margarita-style beer.

I say that because it was brewed with sea salt and lime, giving it a touch in the Gose arena without bringing in too much tartness at all. Except for the lime juice, the limes bring plenty of tartness.

Anyway, this beer is a pale straw color, slightly hazy, and with a very splendidly moderate lime and biscuit aroma. The flavor belongs to the limes, and it’s got this nice sweetness to it that the malt tends to back up quite a bit.

It is refreshing, it is tart, and I cannot imagine how wonderfully this would go with copious amounts of barbecue. If you are going this year, I am jealous, enjoy the event and let me know how it is. If you’re not, I would definitely check out their site to learn more about this disease and how you can help.

And have some barbecue for me.

Drink Florida Craft,

Dave
