Brew Review – Trail Junk and Horse Wheelie by Right Around The Corner

There’s just a special place in my heart for Right Around The Corner.

It is most definitely not the standard brewery vibe, and I think that makes it brilliant. If you listened to Episode 99 of the Florida Beer Podcast, as wacky as that episode was, you’ll know. But in the meantime, it’s always good to talk about their beers.

Co-owner and brewer Tom Rockhill gave me the biggest benefit of brewing on a system as small as theirs – the ability to experiment.

Basically, when you’re not making that many barrels, you can play around to your heart’s content and make beer whatever you want it to be. Small size removes the impending doom of being stuck with a ton of kegs of a beer that won’t move.

That’s how I was able to try a few different ones. After chatting with him and going over the tap list, I settled in on Trail Junk (Sour, 3.8% ABV).

This is actually a collaboration beer, named for the organization Tom and his team are close to. Trail Junk organizes cleanups in and around the St. Pete area, and Tom actually donates his old grain sacks to hold all of the garbage collected.

Take a look at their Facebook page, those sacks are readily apparent.

How you got a fruited sour ale out of all of this I will never know. But it was darn fantastic, with a solid amount of pucker and a very berry-forward flavor that brought just a little bit of sweetness to an otherwise absolutely electric sour ale.

That was not my only beer, however, as he and I have been kicking around ideas for something that will hopefully come to fruition (no pun intended) in the near future. A lot of that was based around Horse Wheelie (Cream Ale, 4.8% ABV), a solid and serviceable cream ale.

I am particularly fond of this style, it being not only approachable but also infinitely easy to be manipulated. It’s got a wonderfully light body, a fluffy sweet breadiness and very little hops.

A hard beer to get right, and if he had messed up at any point along the way, it would be incredibly evident. Luckily he did not, and what you get is an enjoyable and delectable cream ale.

Right Around The Corner is a fun place to go, and even my daughter had a great time. She’s asked more than a few times if we can go back there again. My hope is very soon since it’s a blast to visit.

Besides, video games.
